When time is NOT on our side
Svadhyaya
As the calendar turns to August, my sense of time goes all whack-a-doodle. “Enjoying this summer day” suddenly turns into “Summer went too fast!!!” It’s in these moments that I realize, time is NOT always on our side.
The unit of time is objectively measurable, but the perception of time… well, that’s as subjective as it gets. Time can feel so many ways: like a whirlwind, like we are missing out, like it's being taken from us, like an empty void, like we are dragging our heels and being pulled ahead by it.
So what can we do when time goes all whack-a-doodle? The first step is to simply take notice. Notice when your words start mentioning time dragging, or being wasted or being out of time. Then, take a moment to step away from feeling time to thinking about it. How exactly is time feeling? What is causing time to feel this way? Is this a recurring feeling or is it based on something new?
This process of first noticing and then stepping back to examine, is what Yoga calls svadhyaya. It allows time to reset for a moment. Sometimes a moment is all it takes to snap us out of it. Other times, when we are facing something big, it may allow us a moment of much needed rest.
Let’s face it, time is NOT always on our side. But that doesn’t mean it's against us.
Until next time,
Laura
