When Life is in a Dry Season

Using Meditation as a Natural Oiler

It’s been such a dry season here, which is why I commented to my hairstylist about babying my dry scalp.  Her suggestion was the exact opposite of what I’d been doing.  Brush, brush, brush! The body knows how to make enough natural oil - we just need to be brave enough to activate it.

I started thinking of other areas of life that we baby.  An area of life that has been a bit dry lately.  Maybe more than just lately if we give it an honest thought.  A  life area that is secretly sore and pushed to the back of the mind.  And yet keeps bubbling back up.  Or an area that is tender, that brings up tears or vulnerable fears.

But how do we go about “brushing” these areas?  Meditation or prayer is a wonderful way to “brush”.  It’s gentle yet honest.  It’s short and daily.  It’s done in a safe spot that you can walk away from (until next time).  

There are many ways to do this type of focussed meditation, so experiment a bit.  Perhaps you meditate in words, thinking of one word each time that describes how this area of your life makes you feel.  Or perhaps you meditate in color, each time picturing it as a different color.  And when you find the right color, then begin picturing the details.  Is it moving or still, thin or thick, translucent or solid?   Or maybe you meditate on where you feel it in your body.  Does it seem to sit on your shoulders or deep in your belly or in between your eyebrows? 

 

Remember that you are “brushing” and “activating” and not solving.  You are simply sitting with it.  Observing it.  Acknowledging it.  Letting it BE.  The solving might happen later, after a month or longer, and outside of meditation.  Or you might find that solving is not the answer.  Perhaps it is more like a healing that slowly begins. 

Meditation or prayer is a wonderful way oil-up the dry areas and the sore areas and the tender areas of life.  So be brave.  Brush.
