The Missing Piece

Anandamaya Kosha

Yoga's Ananadamaya Kosha speaks of spaces between us and how our spaces are meant to be filled. We are part of a whole. Mother's Day yoga theme.

If you ask the modern American to list which aspects of the self humans should spend our energies developing, I’d guess we would probably get:

  • physical self

  • emotional/mental self

  • sensual self

  • wisdom/intellectual self.

And the ancient yogis of old would agree!  That’s 4 of the 5 Koshas!

And yet we are often left wanting.  We have this subtle nagging feeling there is a gap - a vital piece that is missing.  Ahhh… the 5th Kosha.   Ananadamaya Kosha is the energy of peaceful space.  It’s the completely present moment in the woods.  It’s the calm mind of savasana.  It’s the harmony of meditation or prayer.  It’s also that feeling of unconditional mama-love.  (Happy Mother’s Day!)

But the missing piece isn’t quiet moments - we all know about the importance of taking time for ourselves.  The missing piece is that the silent space we create isn’t meant to remain a space!  It’s meant to be filled!

Ananadamaya Kosha is the peaceful space that gets filled.  It’s the connection that we find in the woods.  It’s the fullness/enough-ness we find in savasana.   It’s the surrender we find in meditation or prayer.  We are cared-for.  We are treasured.  We are full.

The missing piece is that we are part of a whole.

Until next time,

Laura
