When expectations don't match up

Pitta energy

I love to love summer. I love dreaming about it in the winter and feeling the first gloriously warm beams of sun in the spring. Summer lovin’ radio songs are always turned up in my car as visions of pool parties dance in my head.

So when it’s actually summer and we are in an extended hot and dry spell, I feel myself getting crabby. When my carefree daydreams are interrupted by real world worries, I feel frustrated. When the songs come on, I feel wistful and let-down. My experience is not matching my expectations.

Yoga describes summer not as a 3-month pool party, but as a time to cultivate a balanced pitta energy. When summer’s pitta energy is balanced, we feel nourished and spunky. It’s the kind of energy that promotes an attitude of, “sure, I’ll give that a try!”

So as I walk barefoot on my dull brown grass, I need to stay vigilantly aware of feelings like wistful and let-down because they are “expectation based”. (See how I’m trying to avoid the “grass is greener” cliche’?) Instead, can I stay focussed on a more balanced pitta approach? Can I be happy when my toes find themselves in the neighbor’s sprinkler? Can my mouth smile when the sound of children laughing reaches my ears?

Finding nourishment and spunk in the little things of the real, present summer. I think I can love that!

Until next time,

Laura
