Creating Flow
First to escape, and then so much more.
I love flow.
I kayak to hear the flow of the river. I’m one of those people who opens the windows to hear the flow of a night time rain. I love the feeling of breath flowing deep and even during a hard hike. Flow yoga, one breath for each pose, is my favorite. And I very much look forward to Friday afternoons when I go to a local coffee shop to write this blog, letting the flow of writing take over.
Flow relaxes us, creating a beautiful escape. But this is only step one of a beautiful and transformative journey. Flow begins with escape, but its purpose is actually the opposite: to get our emotions flowing.
Talking and praying aren’t the only ways to open our emotions and get them flowing. Many cultures speak of a physical energy in the body that, when opened, allows our emotions to flow. Maybe you’ve heard it as chi and the acupuncture meridians or prana and the chakras. In this type of flow, you use movement and breath to open up. It may sound a bit scary, but opening a flow of emotions (through words, prayers, thoughts or energy) doesn’t have to feel like a dam releasing. Through practice and repetition, it feels more like a stream.
Perhaps escape is the purpose after all. We get the flow going to relax and escape. We allow the emotions to open and flow. By releasing, we escape the physical and mental hardships that come with blocked emotions.
Let’s get flowing!
Until next time,
Laura
