During the Pauses

That’s when the important stuff happens.

Last weekend, my husband and I watched a play that began with two people having a conversation on stage.  The audience began to shift uneasily, waiting for the action to begin.  After a while, we all began to realize that action wasn’t coming. Collectively we slowed down the speed of our thoughts.  We stopped anticipating.  This play was about the words, the pauses, the in-between.

Maybe you’ve heard the saying, “real life happens during the in-between”.  Between planning the perfect birthday parties and the perfect Christmas experiences and the perfect vacations, is when the Real memories are happening.

Yoga agrees.  In fact, the very first line of the Yoga Sutra is, “now is the time for yoga”.  Now is the time for running, or hiking, or praying, or playing.  Not when we need it.  Not when we have the energy.  Not when we have better shoes or a better mat.  Not when we have the right place or the right space.

At the end of that 2 hour play, not one person in the audience grabbed for their phones.  We were in a bit of a zone.  Our minds had quieted.  We experienced 2 hours of watching characters during the in-between moments of their life.

A teenage girl behind me whispered, “that was amazing.”

Yep.

Until next time,
