Changing our outside, may change our inside!

Low mood and the link to kapha energy.

Days spent on the couch with tissues close at hand, isolation, comfort foods, a long string of sad movies.  Sounds like the observances of a bad breakup!  In actuality, I was sick with one of those yucky autumn illnesses. As day 4 turned into day 5, I realized that even though it wasn’t a breakup, my outside actions were the same.  And because of this, my insides were starting to feel lethargic and sad.

Yoga would suggest checking my outside actions to see if they are creating an excess of Kapha energy.  Kapha energy is great when kept in balance.  It allows us to enjoy being alone for a bit.  It allows us to slow down and really feel a good, sad flick.  It allows us to close our eyes in contentment when eating comfort food.  But as with all of the energies, too much Kapha is not a good thing.

Being sick, I could only tweak my outside actions.  I switched from sad movies to The Great British Baking Show.  I went on a very slow walk around the block while calling a friend.  I did some energizing yoga breathing.  And just like magic, changing my outside actions started to change my inside feelings.

Of course life isn’t always simple, and low mood may be caused by something else.  But at the very least, Kapha energy is a way of ruling out a simple reason, and the start of a journey to discover the deeper cause.

We all know the power that an outside hug has on our insides.  Looking into Kapha energy may be worth a try!

Until next time,
